A meeting was held today in Sarajevo between the Minister of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dubravka Bošnjak, and the newly appointed UNICEF Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Marc Lucet.

The meeting was also attended by Sanja Kabil, Head of the Education Program, and Jela Aćimović, Head of the Health Sector at UNICEF. They discussed the ongoing cooperation between the Ministry of Civil Affairs of BiH and UNICEF, and the significant results achieved so far for the benefit of children.

One of the important projects currently being implemented by the Ministry of Civil Affairs of BiH in cooperation with UNICEF is the GIGA global program. Launched in 2019 as a result of a joint initiative by UNICEF and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the strategic goal of the program is to provide Internet access to all schools worldwide by 2030, and Bosnia and Herzegovina is the first country outside the European Union to join this program.

As part of the global GIGA program, BiH has mapped data on the geolocation and Internet access of schools. The GIGA map has located 2,007 primary and secondary schools in BiH, of which more than 30 percent do not have Internet access.

Minister Bošnjak stated that the Ministry of Civil Affairs of BiH, in cooperation with the relevant educational authorities, will continue to undertake activities aimed at improving the quality of education, aware of the fact that education is a basic human right and a driver of social and economic development.

"Every child should have access to information and quality learning content," added Bošnjak.

It was noted that the Ministry of Civil Affairs of BiH has good cooperation with the UNICEF Office in BiH. Numerous projects in the fields of social and child protection, social inclusion, science, demining, education, and health have been implemented so far.
