Minister of Civil Affairs Dubravka Bošnjak led the delegation of Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 76th annual session of the World Health Assembly in Geneva.  Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), spoke to the assembly on the opening day of the session about "Saving Lives, Driving Health for All."

Some of the important topics for the further work of the World Health Organization (WHO) were discussed, which determine the immediate and long-term future of the organization, primarily the program budget for the next two years, key decisions about the sustainable financing and changes to improve WHO’s processes and accountability.

Delegates discussed the key role WHO plays in the global architecture of health emergencies. Last year's progress, achievements and challenges were discussed.

Reorienting health systems to primary health care as a resilient foundation for universal health coverage and preparations for the United Nations General Assembly high-level meeting on universal health coverage were discussed. Public health emergencies were also analysed, primarily through the strengthening WHO preparedness for and response to  health emergencies, as well as the implementation of international health regulations.

Special attention in the work of the Assembly, which will continue until 30 May 2023, will be the end of violence against children through the strengthening of health systems and a multi-sectoral approach.

The World Health Assembly is the decision-making body of the WHO. The sessions of the Assembly are attended by delegations from 194 WHO member states and focus on the specific health agenda prepared by the Executive Board. The general functions of the World Health Assembly are to determine the Organization's policy, appoint the Director General, supervise financial policies, and review and approve the proposed program budget. The Health Assembly is held annually in Geneva, Switzerland.
