11/05/2024
The Minister of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dubravka Bošnjak, met with Hans Kluge, the newly appointed Regional Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for Europe, to discuss the long-standing cooperation between Bosnia and Herzegovina and WHO. Minister Bošnjak congratulated Kluge on his re-election as WHO Regional Director and expressed hope for the continuation of successful cooperation. During the conversation, they also agreed on his upcoming visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina, which will further strengthen relations between BiH and WHO.
In cooperation with WHO, UNICEF, and the World Bank, BiH is implementing a healthcare system reform project worth 10 million euros, with a particular emphasis on primary healthcare. WHO is involved in the project activities, contributing 5.9 million euros. The assistance provided by WHO to Bosnia and Herzegovina during the COVID-19 pandemic was also highlighted, including donations of medical equipment and supplies, as well as support for strengthening the capacity for monitoring, recording, and reporting on immunization efforts, including COVID-19 vaccinations.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is also intensifying efforts in cancer prevention, with a special focus on early detection and improving access to diagnostics and treatment. The Minister expressed the hope that, through BiH’s membership in the EU4Health programme, domestic health institutions will have the opportunity to participate in cancer control initiatives and implement best practices from European Union countries.
Minister Bošnjak and WHO Regional Director Hans Kluge agreed that future priorities for cooperation will include strengthening the healthcare system, cancer prevention, digitalization, immunization, reducing antimicrobial resistance, and preparedness for future pandemics and crises.
This cooperation is crucial for ensuring continuity and improving healthcare services in BiH, particularly in the areas of prevention and health care system reform.
