Horizon Europe EU framework program for research and innovation for the period 2021-2027

Bosnia and Herzegovina is an associated country of the EU Framework Program for Research and Innovation Horizon Europe. The status of an associated country is based on the signed International Agreement between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the European Union, on the participation of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Union's Horizon Europe program. The agreement applies from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2027.

The status of an associated country opens to our academic community and companies European research and innovation funds worth 95.5 billion euros for the period 2021-2027. year.

Organizations from Bosnia and Herzegovina participate in Horizont Europe projects and tenders under the same conditions as organizations from the member states of the European Union. This program is an opportunity to collaborate with the best scientists in Europe. The success of organizations from BiH depends on the quality of proposed projects and skills in connecting with international partners.

Representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina were appointed to the program committees of Horizon Europe in the role of observers.

The budget of the Horizon Europe program amounts to 95.5 billion euros and represents the largest open source of funding for research and innovation in the world. It finances climate change research, helps achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and increases EU competitiveness and growth.

Horizon Europe facilitates cooperation and strengthens the impact of research and innovation on the development, support and implementation of EU policies while addressing global challenges. It supports the creation and better dissemination of excellent knowledge and technologies. It creates jobs, fully includes the EU's talent pool, encourages economic growth, promotes industrial competitiveness and optimizes the impact of investments in the strengthened European Research Area

Horizon Europe is composed of three main program pillars: Excellence in Science, Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness, and Innovative Europe.

I. Excellence in science (25 billion euro fund) - aims to increase the EU's global scientific competitiveness.

It supports new research projects, funds scholarships for experienced researchers, training and exchange networks for doctoral students, and invests in top-class research infrastructures. It consists of the following funds:

II Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness (fund of 53.5 billion euros) supports research related to societal challenges and strengthens technological and industrial capacities through 6 clusters and 5 missions, including the Joint Research Center.

Six thematic clusters cover the entire spectrum of sustainable development goals:

  1. Health;

  2. Culture, creativity and inclusive society;

  3. Civil security;

  4. Digitization, industry and space;

  5. Climate, energy and mobility;

  6. Food, bioeconomy, natural resources, agriculture and environment

Five missions: aim to solve the biggest challenges facing society, and achieve key EU policy priorities through the following components:

  1. Adaptation to climate change;

  2. Cancer;

  3. Climate neutral and smart cities;

  4. Healthy oceans, seas, coastal and inland waters;

  5. Healthy soil and food

III Innovative Europe (a fund of 13.6 billion euros) - aims to make Europe a leader in innovations that create new markets, support technologies that encourage the integration of education, research and innovation. It consists of the following funds:

The horizontal part of the Program - Expansion of participation and strengthening of the European Research Area supports the expansion of cooperation within the European context and beyond.
