The first kidney transplant has been successfully performed at the Mostar University Clinical Hospital (SKB Mostar). The procedure involved a father donating a kidney to his son, singer Samir Alebić from Konjic, who informed the public about the operation through an emotional post on Instagram.
Alebić revealed that much of the public was unaware that he had been undergoing dialysis for the past year and a half due to chronic kidney disease.
“Many of you did not know, except for my family, relatives, and close friends, that I had been on dialysis for the past year and a half because my kidneys had been chronically diseased,” Alebić wrote.
According to Alebić, the transplant was carried out yesterday at SKB Mostar with the participation of the hospital’s urology team, physicians from Merkur University Hospital in Zagreb, Dr. Mladen Knotek, and Dr. Fila Raguž, who, as he noted, had been overseeing his treatment since the onset of his illness.
“Yesterday, to my great satisfaction, as well as my father’s and the satisfaction of the urology team at SKB Mostar, the team of doctors from Merkur University Hospital in Zagreb, Dr. Mladen Knotek, and of course my doctor, Fila Raguž, who has guided me from the very beginning of my illness, a kidney transplant was performed — the first one at SKB Mostar. My father donated the kidney,” Alebić announced.
He added that the surgery was successful and that the transplanted kidney began functioning immediately.
“The operation went perfectly, and the kidney started working right away — literally 30 seconds after it was transplanted into my body,” he wrote.
Alebić expressed his gratitude to the medical teams from Mostar and Zagreb, the nursing staff, his physician Dr. Fila Raguž, and his family, who supported him throughout his treatment.
“A huge thank you once again to the team of doctors from Zagreb, Dr. Mladen Knotek, the team of nurses who are taking excellent care of us, and especially to my doctor, Fila Raguž, who has been with me from the very beginning. Both my father and I feel great. Thank you to my family and my wife for their support, as well as to my son, who is my greatest hope through all of this. I love you all,” Alebić said.
The first kidney transplant performed at SKB Mostar marks a significant milestone for the hospital and for patients who, until now, generally had to rely on other clinical centers for such procedures.
